Portability of health related information and its accessibility at points-of-care have been one of the major challenges of our healthcare system. The utopian state where an individual's health record can be accessed by a provider at any location and at any time remains unfulfilled. The cost of disruption in accessibility to health information is high and not limited to sub-optimal care and compromised patient safety.

Comprised of health informaticians, healthcare administrators and physicians, Health Postbox Express team members are well aware of these consequences. The potential consequences became poignantly evident during a period of time when one of our team members became ill, and the inability to exchange health information efficiently amongst providers manifested those issues in the care that was able to be provided. Delay in diagnosis and treatment because of a time lag in obtaining relevant health information; therapeutic decisions based on incomplete information; and redundant testing due to loss of information, all made the experience frustrating and tiresome.

As we reflected on the situation; we realized that lack of ownership of our health information and lack of practical inter-communication avenues between healthcare providers were the central problems. How convenient and efficient would it be if we could simply communicate our health records accurately and timely to every provider we sought? It was with this concept in mind that we embarked upon a venture to develop a solution where individual providers, hospitals, pharmacies and laboratories can securely send copies of health records to a patient-owned portal. Health Postbox Express was born from this idea. It represents a solution by which every healthcare consumer can gain control of their family's health information and share it with their providers in order to help them make fully-informed treatment decisions.
